Archibald Llewellyn Williams papers, 1862-1909.

The collection consists of Williams's original and typed transcripts of his 1871 diary, the year he was appointed as Kansas attorney general; misc. legal documents; professional correspondence, mostly arranged chronologically, 1865-1907; copies of documents from the U.S. Department of the Interior, including the Union Pacific Railroad articles of incorporation and a document regarding a contract between the superintendent of Indian Affairs & the Shawnee Tribe; biographical notes; and other misc. materials. Diary entries are typically brief and may consist of information on the weather, Williams's activities for the day, the health of himself & his family, a quotation, and his work. The legal and court documents include cases involving the Union Pacific; the Arkansas Valley Railway Company; the Kansas Pacific; the Missouri, Kansas, and Texas Railway Company; Western Union Telegraph Company; the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway Company; and others. There are also some documents for the case State of Kansas v. State of Colorado or involving the Kansas superintendent of insurance, the city of Topeka, Shawnee County, etc. Also in the collection is one folder of misc. papers from Henry Clay Williams, 1844-1881, who moved to Kansas in 1861 and served in the Civil War.
